Obesity Overview

Mental Health

The mental health effects of obesity are equally concerning with studies showing a strong correlation between obesity and psychiatric disorders. Obesity is linked to higher incidence of depression, anxiety disorders, and even bipolar disorder. Individuals with obesity often experience social stigma, discrimination, low self-esteem, and even racism, all of which can contribute to mental health challenges. The psychological impact can lead to a cycle where emotional distress fuels unhealthy eating behaviors, sedentary lifestyles, use of harmful substances, and social isolation, worsening the condition. Employees suffering from these mental health conditions may experience reduced motivation and engagement at work, known as presenteeism, where they are physically present but mentally unengaged, leading to lower productivity. Additionally, the compounded stress from both mental and physical health issues can exacerbate absenteeism, further affecting workplace efficiencies.
